Point Lisas Power Station

The Point Lisas Power Station is located on the Point Lisas Industrial Estate in Couva. Construction of the plant began in 1976 with the establishment of a 132,000 Volt Switchyard and the installation of the first fully computer - controlled gas turbine generator unit rated at 88MW which was commissioned in 1977.

In 1978, two 20 MW Simple Cycle Gas Turbine-Generator units were added, increasing the total installed capacity of the Power Station to 128 MW and providing “Black Start Capability” which is the ability to start up independently of the power grid.

Between 1980 and1982, three additional 88MW units and four 62.5MW units were installed, bringing the total installed capacity to 642MW and making this Power Station the largest in the country. In 2007, two 105MW units were installed. At present, the total installed capacity of this plant is 763 MW.

Additionally, the feasibility of using steam for power generation is being explored for our Point Lisas Power Station as part of a co-generation project. PowerGen has also expressed its interest in renewable energy as part of a government defined goal of 10% of the nation’s electricity being produced by renewable energy by 2021.
