PowerGen POS Decommissioning Project Update
Date : September 8th, 2021
COMMENCEMENT OF PHASE TWO OF THE POWERGEN POS DECOMMISSIONING PROJECT
Iconic stacks to be demolished as part of Phase Two activities
Phase Two of the PowerGen POS Decommissioning Project commenced on August 3rd, 2021. This phase of the project includes the dismantling and disposal of the four iconic stacks which have dominated the Port of Spain skyline for six decades. To date, the number 1&2 stacks have been demolished and preparations are in progress to demolish the number 3 stack. In addition to the stacks, the main plant and associated buildings will be demolished in the near future.
All relevant regulatory approvals were received before the start of Phase Two scheduled works. Any consequential effects of the demolition works will be mitigated in accordance with the Certificate of Environmental Clearance for the project, other applicable regulatory requirements, industry standards and best practices in Health, Safety and Environment. Public consultations formed part of the community engagement process and channels have been established to enable 24-hour communication with the neighbouring community.
Local content has been a key component of our project planning and execution. In this phase, Amcoweld Engineering Services Limited has been contracted to carry out the dismantling and disposal of the stacks and ancillary structures.
We remain confident in the expertise and capabilities of our project team and suppliers. Our project goals include completion of our scope of works in a safe and environmentally-responsible manner, in compliance with established guidelines and with minimal disruption to our neighbouring community.
We thank all stakeholders for their continued support and co-operation.
